Personal DS comment: what a shocker when you get that prenatal screening risk! When we were 12 weeks pregnant with Hope we were told we had a 1:2 chance of Hope having DS after blood tests....as first time parents-to-be,expecting perfect kids, the white picket fence etc. it was a major blow to discover how out of control we really were and a real grieving period for the baby we had expected. It was also sad because we had waited for the 12 week mark to announce we were expecting so sharing our news was more about the possibility of our child having DS than rejoicing over the blessing of being pregnant...pretty depressing! After a few weeks of 'mourning' we adjusted somewhat, strengthened by our faith and hope in who God is; wonderfully supportive friends and family; a loving doctor and; just the sheer wonder at my growing belly. Best experience for us upon hearing that 1:2 news was the stream of cars full of friends and
family who rocked up on our doorstep unannounced to just pray and be with us...it was REALLY AWESOME!

Down syndrome awareness month
So this month is Down Syndrome awareness month...think I will try post a few bits of info for those of you interested and will throw in a few personal experiences along the way
Q: how many babies are born with Down Syndrome?
A: according to Down Syndrome South Africa, about 1 in 500 babies are born with Down syndrome in our country, WHO says "The estimated incidence of Down Syndrome is between 1 in 1,000 to 1 in 1,100 live births worldwide. Each year approximately 3,000 to 5,000 children are born with this chromosome". Figures vary across countries and a large number of babies are aborted when prenatal screening tests indicate a high risk of Down Syndrome so these figures underestimate the rate of occurrence.

Surprise gifts - awesome!
Today I got surprised with a free term of Mums and Babes for Hope and I! I went to the first class to try it out and then the wonderful instructor just gifted me with a free term. It was totally unexpected and I felt so blessed it might my heart happy ...and now 'm so excited because I have a mums and babes class to go to every Thursday and a whole bunch of new moms to make friends with. I don't know if it's because Hope has Down Syndrome but she sure is good at spreading the love and everyone tells me how beautiful she is...could be they are just being kind but I like to think that God gave her such a beautiful little soul that everybody feels compelled to just share the love!
